These octagonal Gennou (Japanese hammers) are our 2 favourite models... the 375g is the hammer used most in our workshop, both for chiseling work, some kanna tuning and general nailing. The small 115g hammer on the other hand is an invaluable tool when tight / awkward hammering of small nails is required, or for finer kanna tuning.

Japanese Woodworking Tools | Gennou (Hammers)
Gennou (or Genno) are a specialist style of Japanese hammer. These hammers are an extremely well balanced tool, made with a unique steel that helps absorb impact of a hammer strike. They are made to be used with Nomi (Japanese chisels) and Kanna (Japanese woodworking planes), along with performing precision hammering tasks like driving small nails in tight or awkward locations. Most traditional Japanese hammers have one face flat, with the opposing side a slight convex, to help perform different tasks more accurately.
