Applying tsubaki (camellia oil) is the traditional method of protecting high carbon steel swords, knives and woodworking tools. The oil creates a thin membrane over steel which prevents rust. Tsubaki is considered food safe and will not turn rancid like many other oils, it is recommended to clean off with cold water before use however.
